South Africa’s new flyhalf sensation, Feinberg-Mngomezulu, underwent surgery and his lay-off may be longer than expected.

Bok coach Rassie Erasmus was unhappy when he first revealed that the No.10 had been ruled out of the remainder of the Rugby Championship with a knee injury.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu injured his knee before the first Test against the All Blacks last month, but decided to hide the injury from the coach and played in that game.

The following week the knee started playing up and Erasmus considered withdrawing him from the game.

He played in the second Test in Cape Town, but Erasmus later expressed his dismay with the young player’s deceitful nature.

“There was some damage to the same knee he injured last year,” Dobson told a media briefing – ahead of the Stormers’ United Rugby Championship Round Two match against Ospreys at the Brewery Field in Bridgend on Saturday.

“That is a concern, having injured the same knee twice in a year” the Stormers boss added.

“The official prognosis is an eight-week lay-off.

“However, given the history and given that you can get an early onset of arthritis with a repeat injury, it will be a tragedy for a player that has a massive contribution to make to the game in South Africa and the Stormers.

“I suspect it should be a couple of weeks longer than that [eight weeks].”

Dobson said they will be very cautious and it means the flyhalf is not expected to play again this year.

“The last thing you want is for him to get some sort of arthritis or some career-threatening situation.

“We will be very conservative with his return.”
