Ellis Park is back

With the previous sponsor opting not to renew their contract, the Lions' stadium in Johannesburg will be known as Ellis Park once again.

The venue for the historic 1995 World Cup Final had its name changed in 2008 on a lucrative five-year sponsorship deal, and with that contract having run out it will be known once again as Ellis Park.

Golden Lions Rugby Union President Kevin de Klerk told this website that the change has nothing to do with the Lions' recent relegation from Super Rugby and was simply a matter of the contract coming to an end.

"The period for the sponsorship has come up and they (sponsors) have decided to invest elsewhere. It is not a termination, we simply have the freedom now to seek other alternatives for the naming rights of the stadium.

"That is all that has happened, nothing else untoward," he said.
