Fortuin to take Eagles higher
Two-Test Springbok Bevin Fortuin has been confirmed as the new South Western Districts Eagles coach by the Southern Cape union.
The former fullback who represented the Eagles and the Cheetahs before going on to get a Springbok call-up from Jake White in 2006 was something of a surprise selection with Griquas assistant coach Abre Minnie widely expected to get the job.
South Western districts CEO Johan Prinsloo told Die Burger that Fortuin's familiarity with the players and experience at the highest level were decisive factors in him getting the job.
"Bevin played at a high level. His presentation was very good and he knows the union and the players. We weighed him up against more experienced candidates and also took their results as coaches into consideration," said Prinsloo.
"Previous coaches who had success here, like Heyneke Meyer and Frans Ludeke, were also not very experienced at the time," he added.
