IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Rising star Jurenzo Julius is another example of the incredible state of South African rugby.

Julius has captivated the local rugby landscape since his school days at Paul Roos, and in the last two years, the 20-year-old has been turning heads on the world stage.

The young man has shone for the Junior Springboks, playing 13 matches since his debut against Georgia in August 2023.

During these appearances, he scored seven tries, making him a prominent figure for the team and a well-deserved recipient of the Junior Springbok Player of the Year Award for 2024.

At senior level, the Namibian-born star has not failed to deliver. Whether in the starting line-up or off the bench – on the wing or at centre – Julius has delivered some noteworthy performances for the Sharks.

According to the URC stats, he has played nine URC games and already scored two tries this season.

He has made 30 successful carries and nine clean breaks while beating 21 defenders.

“The rapid growth has been a surprise because I was planning on going back to playing U21 [for the Sharks],” Julius told reporters at the SA Rugby Awards at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

“But it happened differently.

“I’m only turning 21 in May, so it has been a surprise.”

The Paul Roos alum said being in the Sharks set-up and surrounded by stars like Andre Esterhuizen, Lukhanyo Am, and Makazole Mapimpi has made the step up to senior rugby less challenging.

“I could not have asked for a better place,” he said.

“Guys like Esterhuizen and Lukhanyo Am guiding me, and Makazole Mapimpi helping me understand what it’s like to play with a team.”

“I think the environment has helped me grow so much and played a role in where I am now.”

Since making his debut for the Sharks against Connacht in September 2024, the young man has been covering both midfield positions.

When asked his preference, he smiled and stated: “A little bit of both.”

“Outside centre allows me to use a bit more of my skill set, whereas inside is a bit more physical for me.”

“So, I would say outside centre.”

He was one of the rookies invited to the Springboks’ first alignment camp of the year.

The young man looks destined for a stellar career and might get his first Springbok cap in July when the Springboks face Italy.
