Kolisi cracks Top 100 list
REACTION: Two-time World Cup-winning Springbok captain Siya Kolisi describes as ‘humbling’ the honour of being named on TIME Magazine’s list for the 100 most influential people of the year.
The list, TIME100, is an annual catalogue of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Compiled by more than 50 contributers to the American news magazine, it was first published in 1999 as the result of a debate among American academics, politicians, and journalists.
The list is now a highly publicised annual event.
“Being named to the 2024 #TIME100 list is an incredible honour, one that deeply humbles me,” Kolisi said on his social media page.
“It’s a profound responsibility to stand alongside individuals who dedicate their lives to enriching others.
“This recognition isn’t just for me, it reflects the numerous individuals and communities who have poured into me and shaped me to be person I am and am becoming.
“I’m grateful to @time for highlighting the importance of compassion and service in our world.”
Kolisi is just the second player – after All Black Richie McCaw – to lead his country to back-to-back World Cup titles.
The Springboks’ 12-11 win over the All Blacks at Stade de France in Paris in October also saw South Africa claim a record fourth Webb Ellis Cup.
Kolisi, the first black Springbok Test captain, has become a national icon, having carved out an incredible career from humble beginnings.
“These are the people who we believe most changed the stories that define the past year,” Time said in their reasoning for selecting who they did on the list.
