Ulster's latest update on Kitshoff is a big concern for Boks

INJURY UPDATE: Ulster have confirmed that Steven Kitshoff will not be appearing for them again this season and he is set to return to South Africa this week.

On Tuesday, the Irish province revealed that the Springbok prop suffered a “season-ending” knee injury in their Challenge Cup quarterfinal defeat to French side Clermont on April 13.

Ulster received the news “following a scan and specialist opinion”.

“He will travel back to South Africa this week, where he will see a knee specialist to decide on the required treatment plan,” said a statement.

It is still unclear whether the injury will rule him out of the Springboks’ two-Test series against Ireland in July.

It also brings Kitshoff’s stay in Belfast to a premature end.

The 32-year-old originally joined Ulster after last year’s World Cup on a three-year deal. However, he will be re-joining the Stormers next season.

*Meanwhile, James Hume sustained a significant knee injury during Friday’s United Rugby Championship game against Cardiff. He will see a specialist knee surgeon this week.

Jake Flannery (thigh), Tom O’Toole (ankle) and Nathan Doak (groin) also suffered injuries during the same game and their availability for selection will be monitored through this week.
