SA Legends to defend 10s title
Some of South Africa’s former greats will represent the SA Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) at this year’s Cape Town 10s.
Kicking of this Friday, this year’s SA Legends team will be hoping to defend their title as Over-35 champions and retain the coveted “guitar trophy”.
The SA Legends have become a popular attraction at the event and the 2014 team is sure to thrill the crowds once more.
They include former Springbok Stormers utility back Werner Greeff, Stormers and Blue Bulls stalwart Frikkie Welsh, Boland legend Andries Human, Neil Cole, Norman Jordaan, Werner Greef, Wayne Julies, McNeil Hendricks, Reg Nutt, Blackie Swart and Quinton Daniels.
“Whilst the emphasis is on fun and friendship, the Legends take their games very seriously and we have a good winning record to maintain. That guitar is very special to us,” said Legends coach and former Spingbok centre Pieter Muller.
The SA Legends are pooled with another team of former greats, the International Legends. This team includes no less than three World Cup winners in Bob Skinstad, Percy Montgomery and Andrew “Butch” James. An interesting inclusion is former Proteas star Makhaya Ntini.
“They’ll be stiff competition but we proved ourselves against a similar team at last year’s event, so it’s game on. We’re ready for the challenge,” said Muller.
The Cape Town 10s has become a popular event on the Cape Town calendar and takes place at Hamilton’s Rugby Club in Green Point on Friday and Saturday. With over 116 teams from all over the world competing, it’s one of rugby’s biggest 10s tournaments.
