Sacha poses selection dilemma for Erasmus

Rassie Erasmus has spent much of the past seven years building depth, but as the Springboks embark on a demanding 14-Test season, the world champions face a delicate balancing act unlike any before.

On the one hand, South Africa must maintain momentum through a packed schedule that includes the Rugby Championship, a new Nations Championship-style competition and a blockbuster series against New Zealand.

On the other, Erasmus must carefully manage the workload of established stars while integrating returning injured players and ensuring the next generation gains enough international experience ahead of the 2027 World Cup in Australia.

It is a challenge that goes beyond simply rotating players.

Several key Springboks are currently working their way back from injury, including Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Ethan Hooker and other squad members who are expected to play important roles over the next two years.

Erasmus admitted that reintegrating those players may prove more difficult than deciding when to rest his frontline stars.

“When a season starts, and I’m not 100 percent sure if we are already sure how we’re going to tackle that,” Erasmus explained.

“I think getting those guys back into the mix is almost more difficult than planning where you rest players.

“Do you throw a player like Ethan Hooker, or Sacha when he comes back, straight into a match? If it’s his first game and it’s against the All Blacks, does he play? Those are the things that will probably be more difficult to manage.”

The Springboks have built unprecedented depth during Erasmus’ tenure, but the reality is that not every player is on the same timeline.

Some are established internationals whose bodies need careful management, while others require game time to accelerate their development.

That has forced the Bok coaching staff to create individual development plans rather than adopt a blanket approach.

“We’ve got a good plan on what players we want to get caps into,” Erasmus said.

“The team goal will always be winning, keeping momentum and building momentum towards the World Cup. But individual players have different goals.

“We almost have every single player on a different roadmap.”

That roadmap becomes even more important with South Africa’s schedule offering little room for experimentation. While the All Blacks loom large later in the season, Erasmus is wary of looking too far ahead.

The Springboks learned hard lessons in recent years about the dangers of overlooking opponents, particularly away from home.

“The Greatest Rivalry is big,” Erasmus said of New Zealand.

“But you take your eyes off Argentina, and they clap you there in Buenos Aires. You take your eyes off Australia, and they clap you there in Perth. Then the momentum gets lost.”
