The warrior of the BlitzBoks: Impi Visser’s incredible journey

Impi is a Zulu word meaning a group of warriors, and BlitzBok captain Impi Visser truly lives up to it.

It’s not a nickname – it’s his given name, one he carried since he was born on May 30, 1995.

Thirty years later, that same Impi Visser led his BlitzBok warriors to an HSBC Sevens Series league title, a fitting milestone in a career built on skill, grit, and leadership.

The Final in New York was tense from the first whistle. South Africa took an early 10-0 lead with tries from Gino Cupido and Tristan Leyds, only for Fiji’s Terio Veilawa to pull his team back into the contest.

It was a nail-biter until the final seconds, but Visser’s defence and composure helped the BlitzBoks hold on, adding another triumph to South Africa’s collection of Cape Town, Perth, and Vancouver golds.

“The theme of the Final for us was just defence, defence, defence,” a bruised Visser told reporters at Cape Town International Airport.

“I think I looked at one of the stats after half-time on the plane here – first-half tackle completion was 92 percent, which is amazing.

“We kept them out as much as possible, and I think it showed in that Final where Fiji didn’t try to attack and break the line. They were shifting it to the next guy, hoping he could do something. It’s because of the pressure that we put on them during the rest of the game.”

The series win carried special meaning; it came during Visser’s 50th tournament on the global circuit.

“You couldn’t have scripted it better,” the star admitted.

“I came off a victory in Vancouver, went into the tournament on a high – it was my 50th – and then performed the way that we did. Even though I think we left some opportunities out there, we weren’t as clinical in the semis and in the Final with attacking opportunities, but I mean, our defence was amazing.

“And just to be able to finish off with a victory and a series win, honestly, you couldn’t have written it any better.

“I’m just truly thankful.”

Visser’s journey with the BlitzBoks began in 2018 at the Dubai Sevens. Since then, he has grown into one of the team’s most influential players.

He was part of the 2022 squad that won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and by 2024, he had stepped into a senior leadership and captaincy role, helping guide South Africa to the 2025 World Championship Final in Los Angeles.

BlitzBoks head coach Philip Snyman said the captain is ageing like fine wine.

“I’m definitely playing the best years of rugby of my life,” Visser admitted.

“I’m just thankful that my body’s still capable of doing what I need to do. I’m taking it very seriously, looking after myself and making sure that I’m fit as well.

“I try to push the young guys and make them see that this is what it takes to play this long. And guys like Ryan Oosthuizen, Shakes [Siviwe Soyiswapi] and Zain Davids have also been playing for so long – Selvyn Davids is also coming up on 250.

“It’s just a testament to the work that we put in behind the scenes and maybe some of the stuff that the younger players don’t really notice. But at a certain stage, you figure out that your body needs to be looked after – and sometimes you realise that a bit later. But yeah, just thankful that I can still do what I do.”

Visser played for the Blue Bulls at the youth level, initially as a scrumhalf before making a move to the centre.

He played for the UP-Tuks in the Varsity Cup and won the competition in 2017. He also represented the Varsity Cup dream team during that same year in an exhibition match against the Junior Springboks.

He has a degree in mechanical engineering and attended Hoërskool Ermelo.
