Will Bok's Munster move elevate him in Rassie's eyes?
SPOTLIGHT: Over recent years, the Scarlets have unearthed hidden gems who have made steadfast contributions in Llanelli.
The likes of Fletcher Anderson and Jarrod Tyler have been standouts. Few players arrive and leave a mark so quickly, but Marnus van der Merwe has done exactly that.
The Springbok’s presence in Wales has been nothing short of electrifying. Now that he is making the move to Munster, it provides him with a new challenge in his career.
Marnus van der Merwe’s career so far
Beginning his youth rugby with the Pumas, Van der Merwe’s talents belonged on the professional stage.
He found a home with the Cheetahs, and with the side from Bloemfontein, he made his PRO14 debut in 2018 and attained silverware five years later.
Taking on the team where he played his youth rugby, the hooker triumphed in the 2023 Currie Cup. In front of the 33,804-strong crowd, the Cheetahs secured the title with a 25–17 win.
It was a defining moment in his journey, a game in which he stood alongside players like Daniel Kasende and Tinus de Beer, figures who are currently leaving their mark on the Welsh game.
The summer of 2024 marked his arrival at Parc y Scarlets.
Time with Scarlets
Van der Merwe brought his abrasive ball-carrying, fierce defence, and phenomenal turnover ability to West Wales.
It didn’t take the Springbok long to make a sizeable impression. His 2024/25 stats speak volumes about his ability.
Van der Merwe made 94 carries, gaining 203 metres and beating 20 defenders. On the defensive side, van der Merwe made 161 tackles at 81 percent, a true trademark of his game.
His ability to get over the ball was evident; he secured 18 turnovers last season.
Casting an eye towards this season, so far he has made 91 tackles, 14 turnovers, and is among league leaders in line-outs won with 90.
Van der Merwe has rapidly become a beloved figure in Llanelli. Recognition followed performance, with a Supporters’ Player of the Season award and a place in the URC Elite XV in 2025.
It marked his emergence as one of the standout hookers in the competition. No wonder Munster wanted him in their pack.
Could the Munster move lead to more international minutes?
A fresh environment could reveal a new element of a competitor’s game. Van der Merwe is a perfect example of this; he played for the Scarlets, which led to his international debut.
The hooker ran out for his first international cap against Georgia, where he hit the ground running, bagging himself a brace. He would later be selected to take on Australia and New Zealand.
At 29 years old, Van der Merwe is in his prime and will be on the hunt for that starting spot for the Irish province. At his best, he is truly one of the best hookers in the URC.
With Munster, the former Cheetah has the opportunity to make an impact at another historic European club. With the 2027 World Cup looming on the horizon, arriving in Cork could give him the opportunity to put his best foot forward for international selection.
Power, precision, and presence define his game, qualities that could make him a difference-maker for Munster. If that trajectory continues, the green and gold of the Springboks and the dream of a first World Cup may not be far away.
