WPRFU elections: Zelt running for four positions
NEWS: Despite no clarity on his appeal against a 10-year ban, controversial former Western Province Rugby Football Union President Zelt Marais has been nominated for every available position for the upcoming elections.
He will have opposition from some heavy hitters – Kevin Kiewits, Ronald Banton and Reuben Machelm – in the race for the position of President
Marais has also been nominated for Deputy President, Vice-President and a member of the executive committee.
After more than three years of being under administration, the WPRFU will finally hold elections on April 30.
Peter Jooste, the third administrator since SARU took control of the then ‘bankrupt’ union in October 2021, released the nominations.

“In accordance with section 10 of the WPRFU Constitution, only members who have paid subscriptions and are otherwise in good standing shall be entitled to attend the meeting,” Jooste said in a letter to the 90-odd clubs of the WPRFU.
“WPRFU will afford members until 15.00 on Friday, April 25, to pay membership subscriptions for the year 2024,” the letter added.
“Any member with unpaid subscriptions [for the year 2024] after that date will not be entitled to attend the meeting, and any persons nominated by such member for the Executive Committee will not be eligible to stand for election.
“Any member that is not in good standing on the date of the meeting will not be entitled to attend the meeting.
“Any person who is not in good standing on the date of the meeting will not be entitled to stand for election to the Executive Committee.”
Marais’ opposition for Deputy President is Eugene Andries, Moneeb Levy, Mario Williams and machelm.
The nominations for Vice-President are Vida Claassen, Anton Coosner, Anton Schelhase and Marais.
There are 28 nominations as members of the executive committee – including Banton, Machelm and Marais.
