NEWS: The winner of South Africa’s Players’ Player of the Year award for 2024 has been revealed.
The awards, voted for by their fellow players, acknowledge the exceptional contributions of players in three categories: Men’s Fifteens, Men’s Sevens and Women’s rugby.
Jean de Villiers, Chairperson of MyPlayers, highlighted the significance of this accolade.
“These awards celebrate the extraordinary talent and dedication of our players.
“Peer-driven recognition is the highest compliment, showing how much these players are valued within the rugby community.”
2024 Award Winners:
Men’s Fifteens
Winner: Cheslin Kolbe
Other nominees: Eben Etzebeth, Damian de Allende, Ox Nche, Pieter-Steph du Toit

While the diminutive winger missed out on the World Rugby player of the year to teammate Pieter-Steph du Toit, he managed to beat the blindside flank to this accolade. Known for his quick feet and ability to turn a game on its head, the winger was humble as ever when receiving the award, which he also won in 2021.
“This recognition among so many great players in South Africa means the world to me,” he said.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities to represent the Springboks and for the trust of my coaches and teammates.
“This award belongs to the entire team.”
Men’s Sevens
Winner: Selvyn Davids
Other nominees: Quewin Nortje, Ryan Oosthuizen

The BlitzBoks captain had a solid year in which he led the side to a Bronze medal at the Paris Olympics and was selected in World Rugby’s Men’s Sevens Dream Team. The speedster missed the opening two HSBC SVNS tournaments of the year, including the BlitzBok’s win in Cape Town, due to injury, but is expected to return to action soon.
“It’s an honour and privilege to receive this award,” he said.
“I’m grateful to everyone who voted and supported me, including management for believing in me and my incredible teammates.
“This achievement is a shared victory.”
Women’s rugby
Winner: Vainah Ubisi

The 21-year-old Bulls Daisies player made her debut for the side just last year, but quickly established herself as a force to be reckoned with. She also scooped up the Forward of the Year award for the Daisies earlier this year.
“This award means so much to me,” she said.
“It represents the rewards of hard work and dedication.
“I’ve grown so much this year and I’m thankful to everyone who voted and supported me along the way. Thank you!”
