Australia within a breath of second
Rob Horne’s last-gasp try and Bernard Foley’s conversion earned Australia a 24-23 win over South Africa and breathed new life into their Rugby Championship 2014 campaign.
It also saw the Wallabies close in on second place in the IRB World Rankings, a position they have not occupied since November 2012.
The Wallabies are now on 88.10 ranking points – 0.32 behind the Springboks, who became the first southern hemisphere ‘superpower’ rival to lose to Australia since Ewen McKenzie took charge of the men in green and gold last year.
New Zealand and Argentina’s position remains unchanged, with the All Blacks still at the summit of the rankings on 93.56 points following their 28-9 win over the Pumas, who occupy 12th place.
With only four major internationals played over the weekend, there was no movement in the rankings, only a tightening up for Australia.
