Koster scores as Bath run riot

Bath had a field day in their Round Three contest against Cammi Calvisano as they ran in 10 tries at the Recreation Ground on Saturday.

New signing Nick Koster took just 25 minutes to open his scoring account with the first of their flood of tries.

The South African No.8 was eased into action with his new club as they banked a third maximum five-point haul from the 67-11 stroll to take charge of the group in real style.

The 2008 tournament champions and 1998 Heineken Cup winners ended up running riot, with centre Horacio Agulla cashing in with a brace of tries as the Rec crowd enjoyed a try fest.

The bonus point was safely tucked away when skipper Guy Mercer crossed early in the second half and by the final quarter Bath players were running them in almost at will.

Mark McMillan, Josh Ovens, Dominic Day, Kane Palmer Newport and David Attwood all got in on the act, with the Italians also conceding a penalty try as they were put to the sword.

Tom Heathcote was given plenty of goal kicking practice and Bath will now travel to Italy for the return tie next weekend in confident mood, before playing Bucharest Wolves and Agen next month in the final stages of a Pool they are dominating.

* Freddie Burns was the Gloucester hero as the 22-year-old flyhalf steered his side to a 29-22 victory over London Irish at the Madejski Stadium to put the West Country club in the Pool One  driving seat.

With the return tie to come at Kingsholm in Round 4, Gloucester knocked their Premiership rivals off top spot with Burns contributing 24 of their points including a 61st minute try.

Gloucester- who beat London Irish 36-34 in the 2006 Amlin Challenge Cup final – found themselves 13 points adrift when the Irish swooped for two tries in three minutes early in the second half.

Sailosi Tagicakibau had given the home side a dream start with their first try after just two minutes and when Halani Aulika and then Anthony Watson breached the Gloucester defence it looked as if London Irish could go on and make it 13 wins from their last 14 home tournament matches.

But those two strikes galvanised Gloucester into action with replacement prop Dan Murphy taking just six minutes to celebrate coming off the bench with their first try before the Burns show resumed with the No10 in fine form.

His 73rd minute penalty was his fifth of the match and came after he had added both conversions to bank four more points and leave the Irish with just the consolation of a losing bonus point.

* The Newport Gwent Dragons' long stay in Italy paid off as the Welsh side managed their first win in this season's tournament with a bonus point success against Mogliano.

Darren Edwards' men had stayed out in Italy for the week after their Pro12 defeat to Treviso last Saturday as they looked to put previous tournament losses to against London Wasps and Bayonne behind them against the pool's other winless outfit.

The visitors scored four tries to record a comfortable win – with Wales Under-20 No.8 Ieuan Jones crossing for a brace – despite being a man down for 50 minutes of this Round Three contest.

The match was played in difficult conditions at the Stadio Maurizio Quaggia in northern Italy with volunteers clearing the pitch of snow before kick-off to allow the game to go ahead.

The Men of Gwent were 21-0 ahead at half time but were down to 14 men after blindside flanker Jevon Groves was red-carded for a dangerous tackle in the 30th minute against the part-timers.

Jones' second score four minutes after the break ended any slim hopes Mogliano had of a comeback before Tom Prydie secured the bonus point with 10 minutes remaining.

The Italians have now conceded 20 tries in the pool and are still looking for their first victory as they prepare to face the Dragons in the second leg of this double header at Rodney Parade next week.
