Nyakane recalled to Bok squad

Cheetahs prop Trevor Nyakane has been recalled to the South African squad ahead of the first Test against Wales.

Nyakane, who was dumped from the Springbok squad last year in the wake of a series of disciplinary breaches, will link up with the team in Durban on Sunday.

He joins the squad as an additional member for the Tests against Wales (in Durban, June 14 and Nelspruit, June 21) and Scotland (Port Elizabeth, June 28).

Nyakane played all three of his Tests for South Africa last June, but was axed ahead of the Rugby Championship – when he failed to arrive for the scheduled departure of the team bus, his third breach of 'team protocol' in the space of a week.

"Trevor is a player who we identified last year already as someone who can play at the highest level," Bok coach Heyneke Meyer said.

"He's currently not the first-choice in his position for the Cheetahs and we're thankful that they granted us this opportunity to pull Trevor into the squad.

"As the Cheetahs are on a break from Super Rugby at the moment, we want to use this opportunity to work with Trevor," the Bok coach said.

"We want to keep him up to date with our playing structures and, most importantly, spend time on his conditioning and other aspects considering the Springbok ethos."

* Meanwhile, Flip van der Merwe has been granted special permission to attend his brother's wedding this coming weekend and will rejoin the Bok squad in Nelspruit next Monday.
