Safe in Peru
Leones de San Marcos from Peru came out top in the global Rugby Safety Awards.
The Peruvian club received the highest number of public votes for their entry “Protocolo de Seguridad” [Safety Protocol] to win the grand prize of US$25,000 worth of safety equipment or training.
There were five additional finalists, Poneke Football Club (New Zealand), Rye Rugby (USA), Melbourne High School (Australia), Projeto UMRio (Brazil), and Waiheke Island (New Zealand) who all received US$5,000 each.
The six finalists elected for the public vote were judged by three current All Blacks – Charles Piutau, Victor Vito, James Parsons – and All Black legend Sean Fitzpatrick
Leones de San Marcos Rugby Player, William Fernández Valle, who led the team’s winning submission said: “As a rugby team we know that nothing that we achieve has been done alone – I’d like to thank everyone who helped to capture the vision we proposed for safety in rugby, in especial to pedro moreno azcona. Muchas Gracias a AIG y a los AllBlacks.”
Founded in 2011, by students at Universidad Nacional de San Marcos, Leones de San Marcos, have over 50 registered players competing across three divisions – Men’s, Women’s and FEDUP [student] divisions.
“Many members of the team can’t acquire protective equipment; the AIG Rugby Safety Awards funding will now help members play without preventable risks” added Leones Current President and Head Coach, Humberto Zanabria.
