Phillips wins it for Bayonne

Mike Phillips was Bayonne's Challenge Cup hero as he grabbed the match-winning try in the dying moments of their clash with Newport Gwent Dragons.

The Wales scrumhalf darted over with just four minutes left at the Stade Jean Dauger as Bayonne battled back from a 19-6 deficit after 52 minutes.

Tries from replacement hooker David Roumieu and fullback Sam Gerber after 54 and 64 minutes respectively had Bayonne back within a point at 19-18 but Tom Prydie looked to have won it for the Dragons with a 68th-minute penalty.

Prydie kicked 17 points on the night as he slotted five penalties and a conversion to see the Dragons go close to recording the result that would have kept their own Challenge Cup hopes alive for a day-and-a-half at least.

A 21st-minute try from openside flank Lewis Evans had contributed to a 16-6 lead for the visitors but they couldn't hang on as Bayonne backed up their 22-19 success at Rodney Parade in Round Two.

Bayonne's other points came from penalty goals from flyhalf Jacques Louis Potgieter in the first and 20th minutes and from his successful conversion of Roumieu's try, with Matthieu Ugalde adding the extras to fellow replacement Phillips' final score.

The result means Bayonne still harbour hopes of a place in the last eight for the first time since 2006, although former tournament winners London Wasps could extinguish that dream with a bonus-point win over Italian outfit Rugby Mogliano at Adams Park on Saturday afternoon.

Mont de Marsan 14-20  London Irish

London Irish kept their slim hopes of quarterfinal qualification in the Challenge Cup alive with a 20-14 win at Mont de Marsan.

The Exiles bounced back from successive defeats to pool leaders Gloucester last month with a third victory in five games this term thanks to a brace of tries from Jack Winter-Moates.

The scrumhalf crossed once in either half at the Stade Guy Boniface, with his first coming with the game 26 minutes old and his second following six minutes after the break.

The latter score pushed Irish 17 points in front after Steven Shingler had slotted his second conversion to go with a 13th-minute penalty as the visitors took control on French soil.

Mont de Marsan kept the encounter interesting with a converted try from centre Simon Lucu after 54 minutes but Shingler looked to have put the result beyond doubt when he struck a second penalty 17 minutes later.

Lucu's second try made for a thrilling ending, though, as he crossed again with six minutes still left to play. Jean Baptiste Claverie's conversion brought the hosts to within a single score but Irish held firm to head home with another morale-boosting success following last weekend's shock Premiership win at Kingsholm.

The result still leaves Irish three points behind Gloucester in Pool One, with the Cherry and Whites knowing victory at bottom side Bordeaux-Begles tomorrow night will guarantee a place in the last eight and knock their English rivals out in the process.
