Rookie of the Year signs for Canes

The New Zealand capital's number one scrumhalf, TJ Perenara, has signed a two-year deal with both the Wellington Lions and the Hurricanes beginning in 2013.

After his debut season with the Hurricanes came to an abrupt end in June with a broken ankle, the Porirua-born scrumhalf is back on the road to recovery and itching to get back into the game.

"I'm excited to be with Wellington and the Hurricanes for another two seasons," said Perenara.

"This is my home and I can't wait to get back on the field and play some footy."

Hurricanes and Wellington Rugby CEO James Te Puni was thrilled to have him commit to the capital for another two seasons.

"We are delighted TJ is on board with the Ricoh Wellington Lions and the Hurricanes until the end of 2014," Te Puni said.

"He is one of our own, straight from Titahi Bay and has had a huge impact this year. TJ is a loyal and committed young man. It is fantastic to see him stay to continue his career in the capital."

Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett was another delighted official in Wellington.

"TJ made a good start in his first season with the Hurricanes and we are looking forward to continuing to work with him to develop his game and continue the progression of his career," Hammett said.

"He works hard off the field to learn and develop his game and I'm sure he will come back better and stronger in 2013 after his injury."
