Boland Suspend Coach
The Board of Directors of Boland Rugby (Pty) Ltd have suspended the head coach of their senior team, Abe Davids.
The Board's statement, issued on 15 September 2014, reads:
"The board of Directors of Boland Rugby (Pty) Ltd has suspended the head coach of the Boland Cavaliers, Mr. Abe Davids, with immediate effect, pending on the outcome of a disciplinary investigation into his alleged coaching qualification.
"Mr. Davids was given the opportunity to provide proof of the qualification, which he relied on in September 2013, when he was appointed as Head Coach of the Boland Cavaliers. To date the evidence has not been presented and inquiries to the IRB and SARU have confirmed that he did not have the IRB Level 3 coaching qualification at that stage.
"The disciplinary process will be completed as soon as possible."
In October 2013 Davids, the brother of the Union's president Francois Davids, took over at Boland from Eugene Eloff who had coached Boland for four years.
At the time of his appointment from 17 candidates, the Union issued a statement which read:
""He has plenty of experience, qualifications and skills to take the Boland Cavaliers to the next level.
"He has 37 years of coaching experience at various levels of coaching in the Boland and is the only coach in the region with an IRB level three qualification.
"It is out vision that the Boland Cavaliers must qualify to play in the Currie Cup Premier Division."
In 2013 Boland had six wins from 14 matches and ended fifth out of eight teams. They did not qualify for the play-offs which held the possibility of promotion to the Premier Division of the Currie Cup. So far in 2014 Boland has two wins out of eight matches and is in fifth place on the log of six teams, well out of contention for play-offs.
