Matthee will provide valuable back-up for Springboks Manie Libbok and Damian Willemse while Kade Wolhuter recovers from a serious injury, reports Rapport.

It is also being speculated, according the the Sunday paper, that Wolhuter is on their shopping list.

The 22-year-old Matthee took over the captaincy from Gift Dlamini in just the second game of the Varsity Cup series after the latter suffered a serious knee injury.

He made his Varsity Cup debut in 2021, during the bubble in Pretoria where the tournament took place due to Covid-19 restrictions, against the University of the Western Cape.

This year, Matthee made his mark right from the start as a role player for Maties in the unforgettable meeting with Ikeys in the opening game of the tournament.

The number ten stepped up for the decisive kick of the match and calmly slotted it without hesitation.

In February this year Matthee kicked a last-minute penalty against the University of Cape Town in the opening round of the 2023 Varsity Cup for a great come-back win for the Maties.

In a rematch of last year’s semi-final, Maties again clinched victory as Matthee scored a try and kicked two conversions and a penalty in a 21-19 victory.
