S14 - Week 8 - Stats
We again give some statistics of getting and using possession. They include running totals which tell which team has scored most tries, which fewest and which team has been most penalised, which team least often.
We shall discuss some interesting incidents later, including a couple of rarities from Durban.
Soundsure have been a huge help with much of the statistics, as they always are.
“Stoppages” is the total of penalties, free kicks, line-outs, scrums and their infernal resets, and drop-outs.
Sanctionary Cards
There were five yellow cards this week. Will Caldwell got one when first he tackled Jerome Kaino in the air and then Jerry Collins high – both in the same passage of play. He was the first Waratah in the sin bin this year. Ezra Taylor got one for a high tackle to go with his “swinging arm” . Liam Messam got one for high tackle. Jason Eaton and Victor Matfield got theirs for law infringements. Seeing Matfield stalking off for being off-side with 22 seconds to play and Eaton for coming in at the side of the maul, makes one wonder how Butch James and JP Pietersen avoided yellow cards and then citings.
The surprise of the weekend in this regard was that Ezra Taylor was not cited at all for swinging arm which hit Anton Leonard on the jaw. It looked entirely similar to JP Nel’s which had Nel cited and suspended for three weeks. Citing is apparently at the citing commissioner’s discretion. Perhaps it is worse if you are visiting from a foreign country. It’s hard to find another reason.
