Statistics - Super 14, Week 1

After the excitement of the opening matches of the 2009 Super 14, we give some of the match statistics, as we hope to do each week, in some cases developing totals.

In the statistics you will notice a large number of free kicks and fewer penalties. This is because of the way the tackle is administered under the experimental law variations that apply to the Super 14. Almost all the tackle offences in these stats are for side entry.

You will also be able to see who conceded most penalties and who conceded fewest, You will also be able to confirm that the Lions’ line-outs were a shambles.

The results of week 1

Brumbies vs Highlanders, 33-31
Blues vs Western Force, 25-19
Lions vs Cheetahs, 34-28
Crusaders vs Chiefs, 19-13
Waratahs vs Hurricanes, 26-22
Sharks vs Stormers, 20-15
Bulls vs Reds, 33-20

Some of the matches were thrillers. The Brumbies, the Blues, the Waratahs and the Sharks all won away from home.

Jason Shoemark (Highlanders) scored the first try of the 2009 Super 14. Daniel Bowden (Highlanders kicked the first conversion. Mark Gerrard (Brumbies) kicked the first penalty goal. Christian Lealiifano (Brumbies) kicked the first dropped goal. Heinrich Brüssow received the first yellow card and Rodney So’oialo the first citing with suspension.

Sanctions

There were yellow cards and a citing with suspension.

Yellow cards:

Heinrich Brüssow (Cheetahs) – fighting
Meyer Bosman (Cheetahs) – dangerous tackle
Adam Byrnes (Reds) – dangerous play

Citing and suspension:

Rodney So’oialo (Hurricanes) – the reason is unclear in a convoluted verdict but the original citing was for using his boot on the face of Phil Waugh who had a cut on his head.
