Statistics: World Cup, pools end

As the pool matches at the 2011 Rugby World Cup come to an end, we give the statistics for the last 12 pool matches and then some stats about the pools – the mosts and leasts, for example penalised, sever sanctions, tries conceded and scored, penalties conceded, and we find the most penalised player of the pools.

The surprise result was Tonga’s victory over France. The strangest result was the match between Canada and Japan which produced something of a replica of their 2007 match. The same teams with the same referee and the same try-scorers produced the same result – a draw.

Some teams appear twice in this group because of the rapid turnarounds some teams have had to endure.

Results, Round 4

Wales vs Namibia, 81-7
Canada vs Japan, 23-23
Italy vs USA, 27-10
Georgia vs Romania, 25-9
South Africa vs Samoa, 13-5
Australia vs Russia, 68-22
Tonga vs France, 19-14
England vs Scotland, 16-12
Argentina vs Georgia, 25-7
New Zealand vs Canada, 79-15
Wales vs Fiji, 66-0
Ireland vs Italy, 36-6

Sanctions

This final round was not as wholesome as those before. There was especially the unhappy match between South Africa and Samoa and the niggardly match between Ireland and Italy.

The pools did not finish on a good note, which was out of keeping with what had been the tone of the World Cup up till then.
