ELVs: SANZAR talks on
The SANZAR nations – South Africa, New Zealand, Australia – met in Sydney on Wednesday and discussed the method of using the experimental law variations in 2009.
South Africa was in favour of using the global version of the ELVs used since 1 August this year while the other two countries wanted an expanded use which would differ especially in the matter of sanctions.

The managing directors of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia have been mandated to continue negotiations regarding the use of the Experimental Law Variations (ELVs) and the format for the Super 14 competition.
“It was a very productive meeting as we all have a better understanding of each others’ positions,” said Andy Marinos, the acting managing director of SANZAR.
“we’ve been able to thoroughly interrogate the various options and it was decided that we share those opinions with our national stakeholders before resuming discussions.
“Those discussions will then continue at managing director level after which we’ll be in a position to make an announcement on the outcomes.”
The board discussed the option of adopting the global ELVs in SANZAR competitions next season or continuing to use the hybrid version as applied in 2008.
The board also examined various options for the qualification process for an expanded play-off series for the 2009 Super 14 competition.
