There are more teams in more parts of the world, more to keep referees on their toes. Glen Jackson will be the referee to blow the start to Super Rugby 2016 when he starts the match on Friday between the Blues and the champion Highlanders at Eden Park in Auckland.
It's hard to judge fan reaction at present to the changed Super Rugby – whether it's excited, confused or just curious.
Also starting this weekend is Australia's first national Under-20 competition. The teams are attached to the Super Rugby franchises and so there are five of them.
There's a Hong Kong referee refereeing in France. That may just be a first.
