Statistics: Passes surpassed

Last week we looked at the difference between New Zealand backs and South African backs in passing. This week we look at the difference between Australian backs and South African backs in the nine-try Test at Loftus Versfeld. This week the South African backs passed more often than they did last week.

We have already given the statistics of getting possession; this is about using it. Tomorrow we shall give some forward statistics which may well have surprises.

In this Test at Loftus Versfeld, South Africa scored five tries to four in a match which produced five tries in 11 amazing minutes. The player who sparked three of the tries was scrumhalf François Hougaard.

Against the All Blacks, the Springbok backs passed 41 passes to New Zealand’s 171. Against Australia the Springbok tacks passes 82 times, Australian backs 140 times. (Amongst the forwards the score was 32-20 to Australia.)

We are grateful to Fikasms for providing the statistics.
