Top men talk forward play
Three top men will run a course for school coaches on 19 March 2014 to talk about scrumming, line-outs and breakdowns.
Balie Swart, the former Springbok who played on the winning side in a World Cup Final in 1995 and was part of the coaching team when the Springboks won again in 2007, and two former Test referees who now run SA Referees, André Watson and Mark Lawrence, will be giving the course at Rondebosch Boys' High.
All three of them are on the committee of SA referees, all three are involved in international refereeing and enjoy the confidence of the IRB.
Swart who deals with scrumming for referees around the country and is intensely committed to helping referees with this difficult phase of play, is also being used by the IRB and SANZAR in this capacity. As an ex-prop and as a coach of scrumming , Swart is ideal to talk on these matters.
Line-outs have become less of a problem with lifting but some play subsequent to the line-out is a mystery and the breakdown looks to many like a lottery.
Watson refereed two World Cup Finals (1999 and 2003) and Lawrence each refereed over 20 Tests and are experienced presenters.
The session on a Wednesday afternoon will have the use of two packs of forwards for practical demonstrations.
This course thus covers technique and laws at a high level.
Schools have been invited to attend but the number of coaches per school has been limited to two.
The fee for the course is R100 per coach.
