RWC match points

The award of match points in the Rugby World Cup, while common enough in most rugby competitions, is causing some surprise to some readers. We give the match points here.

The match points allotted are as follows:

Win – 4 points
Draw – 2 points
Defeat – 0 points

Bonus points

Scoring four tries or more – 1 point
Losing by fewer than 8 points – 1 point.

So far France got a bonus point for losing by fewer than 8 points and there have been bonus points for scoring four tries or more for New Zealand, Australia, Wales, South Africa, Scotland, Ireland and Argentina (against Georgia).
