Shrinking Murrayfield

The Scots play Romania at Murrayfield, and the field of play has had to be shrunk somewhat to conform to the fields played on in France.

All the fields have had the same dimensions – 68 metres wide with an in-goal of 10 metres.

At Murrayfield the field of play has been 70 metres wide and the in-goal 17 metres.

Murrayfield’s head of facilities Mark Laidlaw commented: “We have to bring the Murrayfield pitch into line with what the players are playing on in France. This should not be a problem as all the teams have played at least one game in France, with the shorter in-goal area”.

The Laws of the game lay down maximum dimensions for the field of play. Not all will have ground enough for maximum facilities, of course, which is why maximums are laid down.

The maximum length of a field from goal-line to goal-line is 100 metres. The maximum width is 70 metres. The maximum depth of the in-goal is 22 metres.

The grounds used in France are also soccer grounds. There is no in-goal area at all in soccer. The length of the filed of play is given as 90-120 metres and the width 45-90 metres.
