Jake White's return moves closer

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Blue Bulls Rugby Union President Willem Strauss has given an update on Jake White.

The Bulls Director of Rugby White has not been travelling with the side due to an enforced medical break after surgery.

The World Cup-winning coach White underwent emergency abdominal surgery on Sunday, January 8.

The 59-year-old had been unwell during the Bulls’ tour to Wales earlier this month and was unable to attend a United Rugby Championship victory over the Dragons.

When the Bulls returned to South Africa on January 8, White complained of severe stomach cramps and underwent a two-hour surgery the same day in a Pretoria hospital.

The mentor is scheduled to return on February 8 and Blue Bulls Rugby Union President Willem Strauss could not be more pleased.

In White’s absence, assistant coaches Russell Winter and Chris Rossouw have been sharing the main coaching duties.

It has been a real struggle for the Bulls, who suffered a 28-37 defeat to the Scarlets on Friday.

“A disappointing loss against a team that is definitely not better than us,”  Strauss told rugby365com.

“After this tough six weeks of travel, our team now takes a break of 10 days before they will reassemble with Jake White joining them.”

White’s return is a timely boost for the Bulls as they host the Stormers on February 18 at Loftus Versfeld.

“We are now back at Fort Loftus, where we are unbeaten this season, with our next match the massive clash against the Stormers on February 18,” Straus concluded.
