The Japan Rugby Football Union has confirmed the appointment of Mitchell as defence coach for the Japan national team, the Brave Blossoms.

He was given an early release from his contract with Premiership club Wasps.

Mitchell will link up with the Japan squad ahead of their training camp as they prepare for their midyear Test matches.

These activities are scheduled to begin in May, with further details being provided as they are determined.

Mitchell, 57, has a storied history of coaching – apart from his stints with the national teams of New Zealand and England.

He had coaching stints with the Chiefs and Waikato in New Zealand, Sale Sharks and Wasps in England, the Western Force (Australia), Lions and Bulls (South Africa).

“This is a great opportunity to add value to Japan, [hopefully] winning Test matches through growing their defence and understanding how it plays a critical part in the way we want to attack,” Mitchell said.

“I am grateful to be working with Jamie Joseph, Tony Brown, Scott Hansen, Shin Hasegawa.

“I would also like to thank Wasps for their support and co-operation in allowing me this opportunity.”
