Nkosi won't be returning anytime soon

SPOTLIGHT: Sharks head coach Sean Everitt revealed on Thursday that it will be “some time” before Springbok wing Sibusiso Nkosi returns to action.

Speculation has been rife about Nkosi’s lengthy absence from the Sharks team.

Two weeks ago, Everitt confirmed that Nkosi “has been offered to go to the Bulls”, but nothing was set in stone and those negotiations still need to happen.

At the time Everitt said Nkosi’s absence was not related to contractual issues, but due to a “gastric intestinal virus”.

Ahead of his team’s clash with the Lions this weekend, Everitt was asked for an update on the 26-year-old, and it was not good news for Sharks fans hoping to see the speedster back in action soon.

“Unfortunately, Sbu returned to training on Monday and he sustained an injury to his ankle, so he is unavailable for some time,” said Everitt.

While Nkosi’s ankle injury is another setback, Everitt said he has trust in his depth out wide and he had plenty of praise for Werner Kok.

“Werner Kok’s performance on the weekend [in the 51-3 win over the Dragons] was top drawer,” Everitt said.

“His aerial  skills have improved over the last few weeks and his finishing on Friday night was outstanding and he brought the spectators to their feet.

“We are very proud and that is probably one of the best games he has played for the Sharks.

“The pleasing thing for us is that we got depth in those positions when a Springbok is unfortunately out.”

Du Toit retains captaincy

Meanwhile, Everitt also provided an explanation for prop Thomas du Toit retaining the captaincy for this weekend’s clash, despite Siya Kolisi returning to the starting line-up.

“When we announced the captaincy when Lukhanyo [Am] left we said that Siya and Thomas would share a dual role with regards to the leadership,” Everitt explained.

“It was pretty much about who runs out.

“I think it is just an opportunity to grow Thomas as a leader and give an opportunity to Siya just to sit back a bit.

“We know that he [Kolisi] carries a lot of responsibility in that regard when he captains our country in various tournaments.

“I see this as an opportunity for Thomas to learn and grow with the guidance of Siya in that role.”
