SPOTLIGHT: The Springboks are reportedly keen on adding former Test referee Nigel Owens to their coaching team ahead of the World Cup.

According to City Press Newspaper, the Boks have chosen the Welshman as their preferred candidate to be their referee coach and they have presented the idea to SA Rugby’s executive committee.

Owens has officiated a record 100 Test matches during his career and he was in charge of the 2015 World Cup Final between the All Blacks and Wallabies.

One obstacle for the Boks is that Owens is helping World Rugby train referees and that could prevent him from being involved with the team.

According to the report, the Springboks could look at a local referee if Owens’ services are unavailable.

When asked by City Press for a comment, Owens is reported by them to have said: “I haven’t heard anything, but it would certainly be an honour.”

Owens retired from international rugby at the end of 2020.
