Stormers pack leaves a sour taste

The stats, however, suggests that the Stormers had the upper hand over their northern rivals but what occurred in the encounter proved to be a different story.

Boasting five Springboks in the starting pack, you would think they would dominate an opposition who fielded just two but that was certainly not the case as the Bulls stood up to the challenge to claim a 33-23 victory.

"You have to give credit to the Bulls. It's John Mitchell's first year, he is not going to be measured by where he ends on the log, he is going to be measured by the performance of the team in certain games.

"This, along with the Hurricanes game, would have been the games he would have targeted quite heavily, it was their first game back [from tour], they playing at Loftus again – that first half performance, particularly those mauls, were very impressive," Anton van Zyl said.

There has been much talk about the effect of the yellow card to Pieter-Steph du Toit, however, Van Zyl believes that it had no impact on the state of the game or the eventual outcome.

"[The yellow card was] Definitely unlucky, it looks horrendous. I don't know how anyone can claim there is intent there. I think it is bad luck but I don't think it changed [the game] – I know it was a pivotal time.

"I was expecting the Stormers to win with a much better forward pack performance," he added.
