Aphiwe Dyantyi highlights

SPOTLIGHT: South African rugby will be delighted with the news that winger Aphiwe Dyantyi has committed to the Lions until 2021.

The 24-year-old only made his debut for the Super Rugby outfit last season, but has since then earned 13 Springboks caps, scoring six tries, and was named World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year.

This is particularly good news for South African rugby due to the high volume of internationals moving abroad after the World Cup. With the Springboks allowing overseas players to represent their country, a number of stars are taking up deals in France, England and Japan, that are far more lucrative than their current deals in their native country.

Dyantyi’s commitment will mean that some big names will still remain in South Africa in 2020, which is needed in terms of the popularity of the game.

In order to bring in crowds at stadiums and viewing numbers on TV, there are few greater assets than Dyantyi. The winger has lethal pace, and a side step that can leave the most accomplished defenders flummoxed. He is a natural try scorer, who has a decent conversion rate at whatever level he plays and is a naturally entertaining player.

As it is clear to see, Dyantyi is a talent that has taken the rugby world by storm, and has now established himself as a regular starter for the Springboks under Rassie Erasmus. Lions fans will be delighted that he will light up Super Rugby for another two years.
