CC TEAM OF THE WEEK: Final round stars

OPINION: Players from Western Province and the Sharks dominate our Currie Cup Team of the Week for Round Eight.

There are six players from Province in our selection this week after their 34-7 win over the Blue Bulls in a 40-minute match at Loftus Versfeld. The Sharks have five players in our team after their 41-11 win against Griquas.

In the backline, Aphelele Fassi gets the No.15 spot with Sergeal Petersen and SP Marais on the wings. In the midfield, we have Lionel Mapoe and Robert du Preez.

Josh Stander is at flyhalf with Louis Schreuder at No.9.

In the pack, Tyler Paul is our No.8 and joining him in our back row is Ernst van Rhyn and James Venter.

The second row consists of JD Schickerling and Rhyno Herbst.

In the front row we have Wilco Louw, Corné Fourie and Juan Schoeman

15 – Aphelele Fassi (Sharks)
A constant with threat ball in hand from the back against Griquas.

14 – Sergeal Petersen (Western Province)
He only played 40 minutes on Saturday, but that was enough to make our team.

13 – Lionel Mapoe (Golden Lions)
He was solid in the midfield against the Pumas and he scored one of his team’s five tries.

He was impressive in that inside centre channel against Griquas. But will he play there in the play-offs?

11 – SP Marais (Western Province)
He was part of a clinical kicking game from WP at Loftus.

10 – Josh Stander (Western Province)
He was outstanding in difficult conditions at Loftus Versfeld. He controlled play nicely and put the Bulls under pressure with a number of pin-point kicks.

His service was quick and clean from the breakdowns.

A strong showing with ball in hand in the win against Griquas.

He was a big bruiser with ball in hand on attack and on defence against the Blue Bulls.

He has an incredible work rate on the field against the Pumas. He was a menace at the breakdowns as well.

A force in that tight five against the Bulls. He did his job well in the line-outs and he put in a few big hits on defence.

He put in an incredible shift on defence in his team’s win over the Pumas.

He destroyed his opponent in the scrums in the win against the Bulls.

2 – Corné Fourie (Golden Lions)
Scored two tries in the win over the Pumas. He was a hard man to bring down.
