Currie Cup Team of the Week: Round Two

OPINION: The Free State Cheetahs started their Currie Cup campaign with a bang in Pretoria.

The team from Bloemfontein recorded an impressive 43-27 victory over the Blue Bulls and they have five players in rugby365’s Team of the Week for Round Two.

The Sharks are represented by four players after their 32-27 victory over Western Province, while Griquas have three players in our selection after their thrilling victory over the Pumas.

Team of the Week – Round Two:

15 – Anthony Volmink (Griquas):
His speed out wide gave the Pumas plenty of problems and he scored two tries in his team’s win in Kimberley.

14 – Kobus van Wyk (Sharks):
The had a couple of good runs and he beat a few defenders. He also scored one of his team’s tries.

13 – Bernhard Janse Van Rensburg (Free State Cheetahs):
He was a big presence in that midfield and scored two tries against the Blue Bulls.

12 – Jeremy Ward (Sharks):
The centre was good on defence and he made some good plays in the midfield.

11 – Lwazi Mvovo (Sharks):
He did a lot of good work with the space he was given, and he scored a great try as well.

10 – Tian Schoeman (Free State Cheetahs):
He made excellent decisions with ball in hand and was played a key role in the build-up to some of his team’s tries.

9 – Tian Meyer (Free State Cheetahs):
His distribution and speed to the breakdown was the best in Round Two and this got his backline going.

8 – Henco Venter (Free State Cheetahs):
He was a colossus with ball in hand. He got his side over the advantage line on numerous occasions and scored a brilliant try as well.

7 – Sias Koen (Griquas):
His work rate was phenomenal on attack and defence against the Pumas.

6 – Ruan Steenkamp (Blue Bulls):
He was ruthless at the breakdowns and he won his team a few turnovers. He was also aggressive with ball in hand and scored a try as well.

5 – Victor Sekekete (Griquas):
His dynamism gave Griquas and an extra edge up front against the Pumas.

4 – Le Roux Roets (Pumas):
It was another powerful performance from the big man. He carried the ball strongly and put in a huge shift on defence.

3 – Coenie Oosthuizen (Sharks):
The Bok prop was strong in the scrums, but it was work rate on defence against Western Province that got our attention.

2 – Marko Janse van Rensburg (Pumas):
His defence still needs some work, but he was a standout with his strong carries.

1 – Ox Nche (Free State Cheetahs):
He was good in all facets of the game. He was a hard man to bring down and made his presence felt at the breakdowns.
