Player ratings: Lion hunters

While conditions were not ideal, the Hurricanes stuck to their game plan of working hard on defence and used tactical kicking to put the Lions under all sorts of pressure.

Much of the hard work was done by the forwards to set the platform to allow the backline to exploit certain weaknesses in the Lions' backline.

Tauriq Ebrahim rates the Hurricanes players!

15 James Marshall

Was showed up on defence on a few occasions but the attacking threat he posed proved more vital in the end.

6/10

14 Cory Jane

An aerial masterclass by the experienced campaigner and his defensive role was not too bad either.

7/10

13 Matt Proctor

Got over the advantage line with two big carries but it was his defensive work rate that really stood out.

7/10

12 Willis Halaholo

Did not offer much on attack and his tackling left much to be desired.

3/10

11 Jason Woodward

Not many opportunities to make an impact but when the ball came his way, he got his side on the front foot.

5/10

10 Beauden Barrett

It was not a flawless performance but remains the best in the business on an average day.

8/10

9 TJ Perenara

Played a basic game but his service was crisp and his defensive work rate was outstanding.

8/10

8 Victor Vito

Solid as you would expect and worked perfectly with his fellow forwards to snuff out any Lions attack.

7/10

7 Ardie Savea

Another performance where it seemed as though he can do no wrong. Carried the ball with intent and got a few big hits in for good measure.

9/10

6 Brad Shields

Set the platform and standard on defence with some ferocious hits and proved to be a menace at the breakdowns.

8/10

5 Michael Fatialofa

Pushed the envelope a bit and unsettled the opposition off the ball but it was effective.

7/10

4 Vaea Fifita

Disrupted the Lions' line-out and put in some big hits on a few occasions.

6/10

3 Ben May

Had an inconsistent performance at scrum times but made his tackles when it was needed.

4/10

2 Dane Coles (captain)

He may not have been his best on the night but his leadership on the park proved vital.

5/10

1 Loni Uhila

The Tongan Bear put in an athletic performance with some strong carries and tough tackling while he was no mug at scrum time either.

7/10

Replacements:

16 Ricky Riccitelli (on for Coles, 42 and 60 mins)

A young hooker much in the same mould as Coles, who is sure to set the world alight in the very near future.

5/10

17 Chris Eves (on for May, 52 mins)

Nothing spectacular during his time on the park but his scrumming was better than May.

5/10

18 Michael Kainga (on for Uhila, 76 mins)

Nor enough time to be rated.

19 Mark Abbott (on for Fatialofa, 74 mins)

Not enough time to be rated.
