SPOTLIGHT: ‘When two lions meet one must die’
A stern warning from an 18-year-old Paarl Boys High captain Thomas du Toit, ahead of the interschool derby against Paarl Gimnasium in 2013.
Described as a “massive loosehead prop with strong scrummaging and ball-carrying ability” at only 18-years-old, one always had a feeling that Du Toit had what it takes to become a Springbok.
Du Toit represented Boland at the Under-13 Craven Week competition in 2008, Western Province at the 2011 Under-16 Grant Khomo Week and 2013 Under-18 Craven Week competitions.
In 2013, Du Toit was included in the South African Schools side that played in three matches in August of that year.
Following his high school career, Du Toit joined the Sharks Academy and as they say, the rest was history.
His senior career included a Barbarian call-up in 2014, and also a short stint with Irish Pro14 side Munster.
In May 2019, the 24-year-old du Toit was named alongside 16 other uncapped players in the Springboks squad to face Wales and England.
He became a member of the successful 2019 World Cup squad, when he was called into the Springbok squad as an injury replacement for Trevor Nyakane.
