Why Willie is the brains in Bok backline
STATISTICAL SPOTLIGHT: Springbok fullback Willie le Roux has had his fair share of criticism over the last few years, but he has proven to be an asset on attack for the Springboks.
We saw some of his vision and skill in the 20-35 defeat to the All Blacks when he put Cheslin Kolbe into space down the touchline to race away for a try.
That try assist increased his tally to 45 for the Springboks since 2013.
That stat has also put Le Roux in some esteemed company on the international stage.
According to Opta stats, “the only Tier One players to have assisted more in men’s Test rugby since Willie le Roux’s debut are Beauden Barrett (55), Aaron Smith (55) and Conor Murray (47)”.

Le Roux’s best years in the try-assist category have been 2014 and 2022 with eight.
In his debut year for the Springboks in 2013, Le Roux notched up seven try assists.
Le Roux has been a mainstay in the Bok squad over the last decade and he has often popped up in the first-receiver role where his awareness on attack has been used.
His experience in the backline will be vital during the World Cup in September and October.
