RG Snyman Biography

Don’t let the calm voice and gentle approach fool you, RG Snyman is a bearded beast and he shows it every time he goes on the pitch.

The giant lock has garnered a reputation as an offload king, being able to withstand the onslaught of forwards and centres alike until the perfect moment for the pass to present itself. A feat not easily achieved, but made to seem easy by the Springbok.

Rudolph Gerhardus Snyman started his rugby career at primary school level and was happy to represent the Pretoria-based franchise, the Bulls, for much of his formative years.

Seemingly a match made in heaven as the Bulls are known for their physicality and strength. Aspects in which the towering lock has copious natural stocks. He stands at a colossal 2,06 meters tall.

The Bulls were keenly aware of his talents and included him as part of their Super Rugby squad in 2015 when he was just 20 years old. His senior debut, however, came in a Currie Cup win against the Falcons. The Blue Bulls took the game 37 - 13.

RG Snyman went on to become a regular starter and was drafted into the South Africa A side the following year. Two years later, he was a regular lock replacement for the Springboks.

In 2018, he helped the South African side reach second place in the Rugby Championship, and went on to win it the following year.

Fast forward a few months and he would come home with gold after taking the Rugby World Cup in 2019 with the Springboks.

The venturesome lock enjoyed stints at various clubs. Besides the Bulls, RG Snyman spent three years at Honda Heat in Japan, a country he refers to as his second home. He made 12 appearances for the Japanese side and netted 25 points.

In 2020 he moved to the Irish side Munster, but got off to a rocky start after tearing his ACL seven minutes into his opening game.

This unfortunately caused him to miss out on the 2021 British & Irish Lions Tour.

RG Snyman’s nomadic lifestyle is easily felt on the pitch when looking at his runs, line breaks, and carries. The wandering giant enjoys an adventure off the pitch as much as he does on it.

This is one of the aspects that make the lock a joy to behold.
