The Australia rugby team, nicknamed the Wallabies, has established itself as one of the top sides in world rugby over the past three decades or so.
They have an excellent record in the Rugby World Cup, where they have won two titles and been runners-up twice; won four titles in the Tri-Nations/Rugby Championship which has been dominated by the world’s best team of the last four decades of so, New Zealand; and over the years produced a number of rugby stars who performed outstandingly on the world stage.
Despite the Southern Hemisphere competitions, the Tri-Nations Championship (1996-2011 and 2020) and the Rugby Championship (2012-2019) in which Australia fared better than South Africa but with New Zealand the undisputed best side (17 of the first 25 titles), the Wallabies’ poor winning record in the Bledisloe Cup for which they compete with New Zealand, rankles more than other results.
Australia rugby last won the Bledisloe Cup in 2002 and New Zealand has, to end 2020, won 48 series/trophies to Australia’s 12.
The management, especially, were very much the subject of Australian rugby news coverage over the past seasons as leadership crises, players leaving for greener pastures overseas and average results became the focus.
