Kicks give EP CD close win
Eastern Province Country Districts beat Boland 25-18 in the second match of the fourth day of Craven Week. The sides each scored three tries. The boot of Hanlo Louw made the difference.
Louw’s boot and a great try early in the second half when Brian Skosana raced over 60 metres down the left wing after a turnover.
In fact turnovers sank the Bolanders and their last effort to score a try ended with a turnover which Eastern Province Country Districts hoofed into touch.
Eastern Province Country Districts had the strong wind in the first half and ended it 18-3 up. But Boland had the wind in the second half and came close to winning. Eastern Province Country Districts looked stronger and better organised while Boland looked diffident, until Coenraad Kotze scored his try and then their spirits rose.
Louw kicked a penalty to open the scoring and then Louw drew his man perfectly to create an overlap for Nicholas Prinsloo who came into the side in the place of James Price who may well have been one of the top players at the week.
Eastern Province Country Districts attacked again and Ettiene Swarts was close. Louw goaled and made it 11-0 after 20 minutes.
At last Boland got onto the scoreboard with a good penalty kick by Morné Hugo.
Again Louw did well with the ball in hand to send Skosana scooting over for his first try. Louw converted. 18-3.
The scoring in the second half started when Skosana raced down the left for a try which Louw converted. 25-3.
This time Boland fought back. They had two penalties in front of the Eastern Province Country Districts posts and twice tapped and charged. The second time Kotze burst over. 25-8 after 43 minutes.
Boland attacked. Eastern Province Country Districts intercepted. Boland attacked. Jamion-Lewellyn Booysen broke out.
Boland were on top but frustrated by errors of judgement.
Boland got to the Eastern Province Country Districts line but lost the ball at a tackle. Eastern Province Country Districts got it back but Conwill Cleophas charged down the clearing kick and scored. 25-13 with 13 minutes to play.
Boland tapped a penalty and big eighthman Werner Badenhorst forced his way beyond three defenders, stretched his right arm down and scored the try.
Boland were energetic after this but Eastern Province Country Districts held them out.
