Red card blues for Boland

The Blue Bulls beat Boland 52-0 on the second day of the 46th Craven Week, being played in East London, a match marred by a red card.

After 13 minutes in the match the Boland’s centre Heinrich Schlünz was sent off for a tip tackle as the Blue Bulls attacked. That left Boland with 14 men with 57 minutes to play. It cannot have been comforting for the Blue Bulls that they won the match against 14 men in such a meagre way.

Admittedly they were against the wind in the first half but they did not score till 25 minutes had elapsed, but it was a try worth waiting for.

Boland’s kicked ahead well into the Blue Bulls 22 and from there they countered till Leroy Afrika went on a long swerving run till, confronted by the fullback he gave a perfect pass to his fullback Jacques Lombaard who had an easy path to the posts. Tony Jantjes converted as he did all the tries.

One could well have expected the Blue Bulls to keep playing wide but instead they played a constipated, close quarters game and managed only one other try when they won a turnover five metres from the Boland line and Johan de Goede burst over.

That was the first half.

The second half was a different matter as the resolve of the Bolanders, smaller in stature and number, wilted and the Blue Bulls scored 28 points in a nine-minute burst.

Jantjes kicked a penalty and then the Blue Bulls took a tap kick and Juan Schoeman burst over under the posts. That was after 48 minutes.

Lombaard scored his second try when he got a tackled ball near the line and from the kick-off and a kick ahead Leroy Afrika made the winning playing inside for tall José Julies to score. The fourth try nearly was not. De Goede broke powerfully and gave Lombaard a clear run to the line but the fullback stumbled and fell. He got up and managed to score as two Bolanders clung to him. That made the score 45-0 after 57 minutes.

Buks Kruger got the last try of the match as the Blue Bulls ran from well within their 22.

It was a match tinged with sadness.
