Glenwood beat more tourists

A much-changed Glenwood team were too strong for the touring John Fisher School from England, winning 45-19 at Glenwood on Wednesday.

With Glenwood’s green jerseys at the laundry and the Matrics needing time off for exams, it was a completely different looking 1st XV that ran out against John Fisher.

A number of Under-16s and second team players made their debuts for the Green Machine – but had to be content playing in ‘Chappie Wrappers’ (nickname of the school’s traditional jerseys), giving the spectators a sign of things to come next year.

Despite the tinkering, the ‘1st team in disguise’, made light work of their British counterparts. Displaying flashes of brilliance at times, Glenwood completing a 45-19 victory.

Glenwood and John Fisher have over a number of years established a flourishing mutual relationship, with boys from both schools taking part in extensive exchange programmes.

John Fisher, a Cathloic Schools from Croydon, London, was designated a sports college in 2003. On their tour to South Africa they will also play against Pinetown, Bishops, Strrand and a Langa XV.

Over on Madsen’s field, Sharks players Ryan Kankowski (whose brother is a boarder at Gibson House) and Scott Mathie (DHS Old Boy) lent a helping hand with the Under-14s ahead of the school’s trip to Affies this weekend. The 1st XV kick-off in Pretoria is at 4pm.

Scorers for Glenwood:
Tries:
Rozz Odendaal, Storm Pearton, Allen Zungu 2, Steen Smith, Ruan Burr-Dixon, Andrich Arlow.
Cons: Pearton 5
