Grey pulverise College

On Freedom Day Grey College of Bloemfontein beat Maritzburg College 86-3, an astonishing result.

College were simply overwhelmed by a very fine Grey team that was too strong, too fast and too skilful for them to handle. Grey moved the ball to their backs at every opportunity and smashed gaping holes in the defence with apparent ease. Their ball skills were astonishing and scarcely a pass went to ground in the whole match.

The enormous pace of Grey’s backline was too much for College to resist and at times, in the second half, they made a mockery of the College defence. In truth, good though Grey were, the College defence was appalling. They missed more straightforward tackles in one afternoon than they would hope to in a whole season and wilted badly under pressure.

The forwards struggled manfully and even took a few tightheads, but were often out of the game as the ball was moved so quickly away from them.

In the first half Grey scored four tries to lead 29-3 at the break, College’s only score being a penalty. In the second half a rampant Grey team added 57 unanswered points, including nine tries.
