K-Day draws in the crowds

The 118th Derby Day between St Andrew’s College and Kingswood College in Grahamstownon 14 July did not disappoint with a large crowd supporting either blue or red.

The weekend included junior and senior rugby, hockey and netball fixtures with St Andrew’s winning the hockey 1st match 3 -1, but the highlight was the 1st XV rugby match which had spectators on the edge of their seats.

Initially Kingswood put a lot of early pressure on the St Andrew’s 1st XV through strong competition at scrums and breakdown points as well as with rush defense. St Andrew’s however remained patient and eventually worked their way down the field into Kingswood territory. In the 10th minute Bandile Zungula from St Andrew’s scored under the poles from a quickly taken short arm. Chris Ball converted the try and St Andrew’s led 7-0.

“St Andrew’s started to dominate territorially, but despite this struggled to capitalize on this as Kingswood continued to compete very well in the forward encounters,” said Harley Searle, Master-in-Charge of rugby at St Andrew’s. “A spate of penalties awarded for a number of infringements in the middle of the half saw Kingswood work their way into the St Andrew’s half and gave them the opportunity to level the scores with Grant Hattingh scoring a try which was converted by Cliff Savage.”

In the last few minutes of the half St Andrew’s Heinrich Smit found a gap and with some fancy footwork managed to evade the defending players to score a good individual try. Almost straight after this St Andrew’s were into the Kingswood 22 again and a chip over the rushing Kingswood defense by Rory McIntyre set Chris Ball up with a chase to dot down for St Andrew’s third try of the half bringing the half time score to 17-7.

The game moved between the two halves for almost 15 minutes before St Andrew’s gave away a penalty in a kickable position. Cliff Savage from Kingswood made no mistake in converting it and brought the score to 17-10. St Andrew’s struck back immediately with a well worked converted try by Paul Benecke which started from a fielded kick deep in St Andrew’s half. Good running by fly half Lesedi Mookapele and centres Bandile Zungula and Rory McIntyre saw a further 3 tries scored in the last 15 minutes of the game. The final score was 41-10 to St Andrew’s College.
