Affies go to Glenwood

On Saturday this week a huge contingent from Affies goes from Pretoria over the mountains and down to the coast to get together with Glenwood in a series of sporting encounters.

There will be hockey, tennis, table tennis, rugby and, out at Amanzimtoti, golf. Of course, the encounter between the first two rugby teams will be a focal point of interest.

At present Affies are ranked second on the FNB Top 20, Glenwood 15th, but more than most Glenwood play top schools around the country.

The Season so Far

This year Glenwood have played Paarl Gim (ranked 1), Paarl Boys' High (6), Garsfontein (8). Monument (11), Kearney (18) and Paul Roos (19) of ranked schools plus Boland Landbou, Hilton, Maritzburg College, Drostdy and Framesby. Sadly they did not play against Westville (12). Of those top schools whom they played, Glenwood beat Paarl Boys' High, Framesby, Boland Landbou, Hilton and Maritzburg College.

Affies have played against Grey College (3) Waterkloof (8), Grey PE (14), Paul Roos (19) of ranked schools plus Framesby and Maritzburg College. They have won all of their matches this year.

Results against Common Opponents in 2013

Framesby: Affies won 41-21, Glenwood 26-24

Maritzburg College: Affies won 51-20, Glenwood 44-40

Paul Roos: Affies won 17-10; Glenwood lost 15-10

Representative Players

Craven Week

At Craven Week this year both Blue Bulls and KwaZulu Natal were a bit disappointing. Affies had eight players playing for the Blue Bulls, Glenwood nine playing for KwaZulu Natal.

Affies: Eduan Keyter, Jurie Linde,  Salmon van Huyssteen, Calvonn Allison, RG Snyman,  Francois Steyn, WP Eloff, Ivan Van Zyl

Glenwood: Kerron van Vuuren, Koos Tredoux, Ntokozo Vidima, Mzwandile Mazibuko, Jaco Coetzee, Sphamandla Ngcobo, Akona Nela,  Morné Joubert, Corné Vermaak

SA Schools

Affies had two players in the SA Schools team – brilliant hooker Francois Steyn and centre Jurie Linde who played for SA Schools in 2012 as well. Big lock RG Snyman may well have been unfortunate not to have made the side.

Players to Watch

Corné Vermaak is an outstanding player for Glenwood, brilliant on the counter. Unfortunately he has had a season spoilt by injuries.

The Affies' player to watch is hooker Francois Steyn.
