Andries Dreyer – Potch Gim's Captain

Player Profile

Potchestroom Gimnamsium hosts the second Potch derby in as many weeks. The game is also a FNB Classic Clash and Andries Dreyer captains Gimnasium from the outside centre position.

Andries Dreyer was born in Klerksdorp on 25 March 1988. His parent’s farm outside Klerksdorp and Andries attended the local farm school before moving to the hostel at Potch Gimnasium in Grade 8. He is currently in Grade 12 and is a hostel prefect. Andries is relishing the leadership aspect, be it at the hostel or on the rugby field. Apart from the obvious honour he is really enjoying the experience of bringing together his peers.

Andries has always played centre. In junior school he played inside centre but in Grade 8 he moved outside and enjoys the extra running space the wider position affords him. Andries says that playing inside centre helped develop him into a good defender. He is quick and runs the 100 metres in 11.1 seconds and like his hero Jean de Villiers he thrives on creating space for those around him. Andries also admires Jean de Villiers’s unselfish approach to the game and the wonderful lines he runs.

Andries played for the Leopards Under-13 Craven Week team but was knocked out of the Leopards Under-18 trials in the final round this year. He is playing in his second year in the 1st XV and  says that Gimmies have a good team this year with excellent loose forwards and lively backs. They have been very unlucky so far and have lost a few games because “the ball just not bouncrd for them”. Their best win to date came against Hans Moore, who have a good team this year.

Next year Andries hopes to study a B.Sc. in environmental management at Northwest University on Potchestroom. He says he will be happy to start playing koshuis (inter-residence) league rugby and hopes to be spotted by the academy scouts from there.

This week’s game is the season highlight for Andries and his Gimmies team. They lost last year’s game at Volkies and are determined to turn the result around this year at home. Andries went as far as to say that their entire season hangs in this game. He is sure every one of his players will give a minimum of 120%. If they don’t win with that sort of effort then it just wasn’t meant to be!
