Australia beat Fiji
Fiji took a 17-10 advantage at the break.
As expected the Fijians were extremely enthusiastic and very willing. They were bustling in defence and had the Australian attack having to try and play their way out of their own half.
Nick Wilkinson with some neat footwork helped set up the exit set but it was Fiji through a penalty goal who scored first. A few minutes later the Australian scrum asserted some power to win a tight head and from close to the line the attack went to the right and Nick Wilkinson again showed a nice touch with a fine cut pass to Luke Osborne to score.
Australia had taken a 5 – 3 lead but the Fijians were searching in attack demonstrating some good footwork before the fullback scored a try that was converted and Fiji regained a lead of 10 – 5.
In the final 5 minutes of the first half, both Australia and Fiji were to score further tries. From 40m out Nick Wilkinson passed inside to Matthew McTaggart who threw a sensational pass back outside to Luke Osborne and with little time and space kicked ahead for William Eadie to chase and touch down for an impressive try.
Fiji were not to be denied and in the final seconds of the half and some excellent short passing scored a converted try to take a 17 – 10 half-time lead.
A very determined effort from the Australian team prevented the Fijians from scoring any further points and in the process scored a further four tries.
Shortly into the second half Australia established good field position pressuring the Fijian line before Rory Suttor forced his way over from close to the line reducing Fiji’s lead to 17 – 15.
Yirrbi Jaffer-Williams took an intercept and from 60m outpaced the defence in an exciting run to the line. Adam Doueihi converted and Australia now led 22 – 17.
Adam Doueihi added a penalty goal to extend the lead to 25 – 17.
William Eadie who is quick and elusive added to his try tally with two tries. The first after some good play down the right side of the field and then Will scooped onto a loose ball and from the half way raced away to score under the posts. Luke Osborne converted bringing a final score of 39 – 17.
